I had a really nostalgic moment this weekend, and in of all places- Reno.
First, let me preface this with a little expression I can’t stop thinking about. It came from a blue and gold plaque that I bought from Mervyn’s (GOD I miss Mervyn’s) when I was 7 or 8 years old. It said,
“The Future Belongs To Those Who Believe in Their Dreams.”
At the time, I didn’t know who or what I wanted to be. I didn’t know what my passions were, let alone what passion was in the first place. But something about that sign felt like it was all I ever needed to know, and believe in.
My parents used to take me to Reno when I was young (back when I played the GAMES at Circus Circus, not the slots) and I can distinctly remember being drawn to the “Catch a Rising Star” comedy club sign. It was a bright, beautiful yellow sign, with flashing lights around it. I’d see the crowds line up and think, “What is it like to be on that stage? What is it like to have all those people coming to see you?”
This weekend, I was reminded once again: the future belongs to those who believe in their dreams.
I co-headlined with one of my favorite (and funniest) people on the planet: Dave Mencarelli. (Friend him, follow him. He’s awesome.) I can’t in good faith tell you I was “happy” with my sets. I was kind of nervous, and out of 5 shows I only felt one of them was good. But all judgements aside, I still flashed back to 20 years ago when I was that little girl who was excited to see the “Catch a Rising Star” sign.
And there I was. Performing.
How did it all happen? How did it all happen so fast? Am I just lucky?
“It’s just Reno, Sandy. Calm down.” -Hypothetical inner-critic voice
But it’s not about that. It’s about how you brought that experience to you with the power of your thoughts.
What lights you up? What excites you? It’s all about the inkling…that feeling you got when you were young.
When I was little, I always wanted to __________________.
I’ve always pictured myself ________________.
I always thought it would be kind of cool to ______________.
You really think those thoughts are in your head for NO reason? Please. Desires are just seeds WAITING to be planted.
So go forth. Dream. Make the call. Send the email. Write the joke. FEEL THE FEELING. Take subsequent action.
If you can feel it…..you can be it.
P.S. And, if you’re lucky enough, they will even give you 3 free vouchers for the buffet. If the buffet is closed, you can use it for the café. And if you don’t feel like the café, Kokopelli Sushi is awesome. The Kokopelli roll is great, but order it as a hand roll. You’ll thank me in advance.
